Why Have Site Sponsors?
People really do write and ask why I have sponsors and advertisers, and express their opinion that the site
would be much better without them. Some folks have gotten downright nasty about it, so perhaps this will
explain it and stave off complaints.
The folks asking about it assume that I make all the money I need from sales of products to pay for the site.
It also assumes I make all the money I need for every day life.
The fact is, I offer a lot more for free than I sell. Most visitors enjoy the freebies and don't spend any
money. They are also the first ones to complain. My site serves almost a million page views a month at the
time of this writing. That's expensive!
Advertisers help pay for the freebies I offer, and help me keep the cost down for products I do sell.
Without advertisers, my site would be much smaller and offer much less because I couldn't afford to pay for
all it takes to run this site without them. I do make my living with this site, but I'm not getting mega rich at
it. Go buy something and help me out with that. :-)
While I do sell products and earn my living with this site, I also pay higher taxes than the average person.
Self-employed individuals get the lucky break of paying BOTH halves of the Social Security tax. So when you
see how much is taken out from your paycheck for FICA, double it, because your employer is paying the other
half. As employer and employee, the government lets me pay both halves. As my
teenage boys say, "Sweeeet!"
To summarize:
Advertisers are not the enemy. Many people find advertisements annoying and wish they'd go away. If they
got their wish, they wouldn't like the results. There wouldn't be near as many freebies.
Have you noticed that many search engines are charging to list your site now? This isn't because they want
to soak you. Our sites are their content. They want to list our sites, but they are taking a necessary gamble.
Advertising revenue is way down because people aren't paying attention to ads. Search engines are expensive
to run and they're not making near the money they used to from advertisers, so they are forced to risk
charging for listings to keep from going broke. Some major search engines have already gone broke and closed
the doors millions of dollars in debt.
My site's ad revenue is about a tenth of what it was a year ago, and I'm serving more ad banners than ever.
This has forced me to raise prices on some of my products.
We, as Internet users are left with two choices. We can continue to consider advertisers as rude intruders,
or we can be appreciative that they help pay the way for more services and freebies than you or I could count.
If we don't appreciate what we have, we will slowly but surely lose many of the things we enjoy. If we learn
to appreciate them, click a banner now and then when you see an offer that looks interesting, and at least
LOOK at the ad to see if it's interesting, then we help the site we are enjoying and help bring ad revenue
back up because the advertisers will see that they are getting results.
It's your choice. Major sites like Yahoo right on down to sites like mine are all dependent on advertising.
Some sites won't make it, some will. I scour the internet day and night to keep my visitors in the loop and
make Hide and Watch an extremely informative site. If you like the site, support it!! And by the way, let me
know what I can do for YOU!!
