Ezine Readership Measurement Using ProLinkz
Brian Alt
A few months ago, I reviewed the CGI script ProLinkz. If you missed that review, you can check it out here
I should say first off that I'm not affiliated with ProLinkz; I'm just extremely impressed with its
usefulness. You can use it to manage email advertising campaigns, track the click-through rates of ads in
your ezine, shorten and/or disguise affiliate URLs, and other link-tracking functions. And I just found out
about another great use for the script: to measure the readership of your ezine.
By "readership," I'm not referring to the number of subscribers on your ezine's mailing list. Rather,
readership is a measurement of the number of subscribers who actually open your ezine's email message and
browse its contents. ProLinkz makes it pretty easy to track this.
In HTML-format ezines, it's a snap, because you can simply use the script to pull an image from your Web
server from within the content of your HTML ezine. Most people read HTML-format ezines while connected to
the Internet, so "readership" can here be measured by the number of people who actually open your ezine's
message. When the message is opened, the image is pulled from your server and ProLinkz counts it as a "click."
In text ezines, simply opening a message won't suffice, but readers will actually have to click on a link
that you track with the script. This might not give you a readership figure as accurate as in an HTML ezine,
but assuming that you track popular links or use ProLinkz to track _every_ link in your ezine, it should
give you a pretty good idea of how many of your subscribers are actually reading your ezine.
Why calculate your readership? Well, for starters, it's good information for the publisher to know. By
tracking trends in your readership, you may be able to predict things about your audience that they won't
tell you in any feedback they send. For example, if your readership drops or stays the same while the number
of subscribers continues to increase, you may start to wonder whether you're delivering the most relevant
content for your subscribers. Readership information is also valuable from an advertising perspective, as
it will help you determine which advertisements do well in your ezine, what your advertisers can expect in
terms of performance, and so on.
