Good marketing is the cornerstone to any business' success.
Once you have established that you're in business with a
product / service to sell, your challenge is learning how to
effectively market it.
While some business skills, such as selling or creative
business thinking, may be traits you were born with,
knowing how to market is a skill you will have to learn.
And, learning effective marketing is done through research,
study and testing.
If you are a new business owner, I encourage you not to
skip the research and study phase. Learn marketing basics
either by attending a marketing course at a higher level
institution or by teaching yourself through books. This step
will save you considerable money and time. Even established
business owners should on a regular basis pick up a marketing
book to ensure their marketing plan is on tract.
Only once you understand marketing basics should you
begin testing various marketing mediums to learn what is
the best promotional avenue for selling your product
/service. In addition to the continual trial and error process
of finding out what works and what does not for your
business, you'll also need to stay current with the latest
marketing tools.
If your business is on the Internet it is even more important
for you to keep up to date with the constantly changing
marketing techniques. Because while you're busy
developing a web site and figuring out how to get it a high
ranking in the search engines, even more effective tools and
promotional avenues are being developed.
So how do you stay abreast of the latest high tech marketing
activities? I recommend regularly scanning business news
and opinion pieces, reading recent articles on small
business marketing and reviewing marketing case studies.
